O Backstage Auctions estará leiloando do dia 06 ao dia 13 de dezembro um material raríssimo da banda Blue Angel. O primeiro contrato de Cyndi Lauper, demos e um show de 1979! Confira detalhes:

Concerto em Nova York em 1979

Apresentado aqui é sem dúvida o mais antigo concerto de Cyndi Lauper filmado em existência. O gerente de Cyndi - Ted Rosenblatt - filmou pessoalmente o Blue Angel em 12 de julho de 1979 em Nova York.

Demos Originais de 1978

Em 1978, Cyndi Lauper conheceu o saxofonista John Turi através de seu empresário Ted Rosenblatt. Turi e Lauper tornaram-se sócios compondo e formaram a banda Blue Angel. Ted Rosenblatt, que assinou um contrato com Cyndi 5 anos de gestão, em 1978, liberou o dinheiro para gravar, a banda gravou o primeiro demo song-4, que ocorreu em dezembro de 1978, pelo Opala Recording Studios, em Nova York e, mais tarde remixado pelo Right Track Studios, também em Nova York, o que foi feito em 18 de dezembro de 1978.
Blue Angel originalmente produziu e mixou as gravações (principalmente Cyndi e John Turi). Frank Filipetti - que posteriormente tornou-se um renomado engenheiro e produtor vencedor do Grammy - foi solicitado a ajudar com o remix das gravações.
A programação incluiu Cyndi Lauper (vocal), John Turi (piano e sax), Marty Horne (guitarra), Richie Macaluso (guitarra), John Larson (baixo) e Eddie Barbado (bateria).
Um fato interessante é que a banda estava considerando a possibilidade de mudar seu nome para "Loose Lips", como pode ser visto em várias das caixas de carretel de gravação neste lote. Enquanto que no estúdio eles finalmente concordaram em manter o 'Blue Angel'.

Contrato Original assinado por Cyndi Lauper de 1978

Destaque aqui é um original e contrato de gestão extremamente raro, datado em 10 de março de 1978, entre Cyndi Lauper e seu primeiro gerente Ted Rosenblatt. O próprio contrato contém 4 páginas e está rubricado por ambas as partes e assinado no final da última página. Attached ainda é uma página 4-adenda (piloto) do acordo, que também é assinado por Lauper e Rosenblatt na última página.
Este documento histórico de enorme vem da propriedade de Ted Rosenblatt. Foi dobrado e mostra o desgaste ligeiro mas de resto está em muito bom estado.

Mais uma vez o blog Blue Angel Band foi atrás dos integrantes da banda. Em 2008 entrevistei o guitarrista Arthur Neilson e dessa vez consegui conversar com o criador da banda, o tecladista e saxofonista novaiorquino John Turi.
Por e-mail, John disse que não tinha muito jeito com digitação e que era para ter paciência (como se eu me preocupasse com isso). Mas deu tudo certo. Ele foi muito simpático e atencioso.

Não postei toda a entrevista pois foi longa e alguns assuntos fugiram da rota mas confira abaixo os melhores momentos.

1- Então John, como você está?
Oi Barbara, estou me sentindo ótimo. Acabei de terminar o mixing mais recente do CD de Emily Long.

2- Há quanto tempo está vivendo no Arizona?
Eu tenho vivido no Arizona há 12 anos. É lindo.

3- Quando surgiu seu interesse por música? Quais foram suas inspirações, seus primeiros ídolos?

Minhas influências foram Elvis, Little Richard, Sonny Rollins, Fats Domino, Miles Davis (com Coltrane) Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Duane Eddy, Coleman Hawkins, James Brown, Mazrio Lanza.

4- Antes de formar a banda Blue Angel você esteve em outras bandas?
Antes de formar Blue Angel fiz dois álbuns com Bulldog. Dois dos membros estavam com o "Rascals".

5- Como surgiu a banda Blue Angel? Conte-me a história da formação do grupo, como conheceu os integrantes.
Eu vi Cyndi tocar com uma banda cover. Eu pensei que ela tinha uma grande voz. Fomos a um restaurante depois de seu show e falei sobre escrever em conjunto para um projeto original. No dia seguinte, nos reunimos e escrevemos nossa primeira canção "Why Don't You Say You Love Me". A primeira banda Blue Angel foi pesada, em seguida, a banda que gravou o álbum Blue Angel. Tivemos dois guitarristas (Richie Mac e Marty Horne). O baixista foi John Hunter e o baterista foi Ed Barbados. Gravamos 5 músicas que Cyndi e eu escrevemos (incluindo uma das minhas favoritas "Flyer").Queríamos um som diferente. Nós escrevemos um monte de músicas novas e encontramos novos músicos que se encaixaram nesse estilo.Essa foi a banda que gravou o álbum Blue Angel. Arthur Neilson, Lee Brovitz e John Morelli, além de Cyndi e eu.

6- A banda chegou a realizar alguma tour antes ou após o lançamento do disco "Blue Angel"?
Nós fizemos uma turnê européia com Joe Jackson após o lançamento do álbum (1980).

7- Não tem como falar de sua carreira sem falar de sua parceria com Cyndi Lauper que acabou se destacando na carreira solo. Como foi trabalhar com ela durante a Blue Angel Band e novamente em 1989 durante a "A Night To Remember Tour"?
Foi uma grande experiência.

8- As inúmeras músicas escritas por você e por Cyndi durante a banda Blue Angel e que hoje em dia são encontradas apenas as letras ( por exemplo, "Jim Jive","Never Was A Woman", "Moments Like This", "Turn Me Around", "Don't Look Back") chegaram a ser gravadas pela banda ou ficaram apenas no papel? (Nessa pergunta John ficou surpreso pelo fato de eu saber os nomes dessas músicas).
"Moments Like This", "Jim Jim Jive", "No One's At Home" e "Shining Star" foram registradas como Demos. "Never Was A Women", "Don't Look Back" e "Turn Me Around" nunca foram gravadas.

9- Depois da dissolução da banda, quais foram seus trabalhos?
Após a Blue Angel, formei uma banda chamada The Boppin 'The Blues (com Arthur e Jim Gregory da Blue Angel). Eu teria pedido John Morelli para entrar, mas ele afastou-se de NY. Nós tocamos em todos os grandes clubes em Nova York e realizamos um Sit-in JAMS no The Club China em Nova York, onde muitas pessoas famosas tocaram com a gente. (Chakka Kahn, Cyndi Lauper, Ronnie Spector e muito mais). Cyndi costumava se juntar a nós para improvisar. Eu me separei da banda por um tempo para sair em turnê com Cyn em 1989.

10- Você ainda tem contato com os integrantes da banda?
Barbara...os membros da Blue Angel ainda mantem contato. Embora não possamos ver uns aos outros muitas vezes, porque vivemos em diferentes partes do país.

11- Atualmente você está trabalhando com a cantora Emily Long. Como é trabalhar com ela?
Eu amo trabalhar com Emily. Ela é um talento raro. Eu pensei que era uma escritora incrível e cantora há alguns anos e ela tem crescido em grandeza, desde então, aos trancos e barrancos. Eu não sei como ela faz com que essas mudanças de acordes e melodias incríveis, tornando o som diferente simples e fresco, mas é aí que a verdadeira arte se encontra. É muito fácil para nós trabalharmos juntos por causa da admiração mútua para outros. Ela está rasgando a cidade de Nova York agora, até o final do ano e 2010. Ela poderia muito bem ser uma estrela nacional e internacional.

12- Tem algum projeto para este ano ou futuramente?
Eu acabo de produzir o novo single de Emily Long "Recover".

Hi Barbara, I'm feeling great. I just finished mixing Emily Long's latest CD.

2 - How long have you been living in Arizona?
I've been living in Arizona for 12 years. It's beautiful.

3 - When did your interest in music? What were your inspirations, his early idols?

Before forming Blue Angel I made Two albums with Bulldog. Two of the members were with the "Rascals".

5 - How did the Blue Angel Band? Tell me the story of the formation of the group, known as the members.
I saw Cyndi playing with a cover band. I thought that she had a great voice. We went to a diner after her show and talked about writing together for an original project. The next day we got together and wrotr our first song "Why Don't You Say You Love Me".The first Blue Angel Band was heavier then the band that recorded The Blue Angel Album. We had two guitar players (Richie Mac and Marty Horne). The bass plaayer was John Hunter and Ed Barbados drums. we recorded 5 songs than Cyndi & I wrote (including one of my favorites "Flyer". We wanted a different sound. We wrotr a bunch of new songs and found new players who fit that style.That was the band that recorded the Blue Angel album. Arthur Neilson, Lee Brovitz and John Morell, plus Cyndi and me.

6 - The band came to perform a tour before or after the launch of the album "Blue Angel"?
We did a European tour with Joe Jackson after the albu was released.

7 - There is to talk about his career without talking about his partnership with Cyndi Lauper was just highlighting that the solo career. How was working with her during the Blue Angel Band, and again in 1989 during "A Night To Remember Tour"?
It was a great experience.

8 - The many songs written by you and Cyndi for the Blue Angel Band, which today are found only the letters (for example, "Jim Jive", "Never Was A Woman," "Moments Like This", "Turn Me Around"," Do not Look Back ") came to be recorded by the band or were just on paper?
Moments Like This, Jim Jim Jive, No One's At Home and Shining Star were recorded as Demos.Never Was A Women Don't Look Back and Turn Me Around were never recorded.

9 - After the dissolution of the band, what were your work?
After Blue Angel, I formed a band called Boppin' The Blues (with Arthur and Jim Gregory from Blue Angel. I would have asked John Morelli to join, but he moved away from N.Y. We playee all the big clubs in New York City and held Sit-in JAMS at The China Club in NYC, where many famous people would play with us.(Chakka Kahn, Cyndi Lauper, Ronnie Spector and alot more. Cyndi used to jam with us alot. I took a break from this group to tour with Cyn in 1989.

10 - You still have contact with members of the band?
Barbara...Blue Angel members still keep in touch. Although we don't see each other that often, because we live in different parts of the country.

11 - Today you're working with the singer Emily Long. How is working with she?
I love working with Emily. She is a rare talent. I thought that she was an amazing writer & singer a few years ago and she has grown into greatness ever since, by leaps & bounds. I don't know how she makes these incredible chord changes & melodies, making simplicity sound different & fresh, but that's where true art finds itself. It's very easy for us to work together because of mutual admiration for eash other. She is tearing up New York City now & by the end of the year & 2010. She could very well be a national & international star.

12 - Do you have a project for this year or in future?
I just produce new single Emily Long "Recover".

Encontro da banda com o grupo The B-52's

Cyndi Lauper e o grupo The B-52's têm uma ligação desde o início da década de 1980. Nessa época o grupo liderava paradas em todo o mundo enquanto Cyndi começava a carreira ao lado da banda Blue Angel.

Durante a tour mundial da banda em 1981, eles encontraram o grupo na Alemanha e participaram de um programa de TV.

Cyndi Lauper surpreendeu seus fãs em seu show no Pridefest em Milwaukee,WI dia 12 de junho. Com um set list impecável, Lauper cantou três músicas do álbum "Blue Angel" de 1980: "Can't Blame", "Anna Blue" e "I'm Gonna Be Strong".
Nos vídeos abaixo estão as três canções, que foram tocadas muito parecidas com as versões originais.

Recuperando o tempo perdido, no dia 22 de junho (semana passada), foi aniversário da nossa angel favorita Cyndi Lauper que completou 56 anos.

Parabéns a essa grande cantora que a cada trabalho feito nos mostra que nasceu realmente para brilhar.

Hoje, 23 de março, o líder da banda Blue Angel, John Turi, completa 60 anos!

John nasceu no Queens em NY, em 23 de março de 1949. Foi influenciado por Elvis Presley e Buddy Holly e começou a tocar em bandas aos quatorze anos. Trabalhou com feras como Jimmy Hendrix, Ronnie Spector, Bulldog, Aerosmith, e Celebration mas é conhecido por seu trabalho com Cyndi Lauper. Os dois trabalharam juntos na banda Blue Angel (1978-1982) e mesmo depois do fim da banda, continuaram com a parceria.

Com Lauper escreveu inúmeras canções, muitas nunca gravadas oficialmente. Algumas, pouco trabalhas durante a Blue Angel foram regravadas por Cyndi nos álbuns "She's So Unusual" e "True Colors". John ainda trabalhou com Cyndi em 1989 na tour mundial "A Night To Remember" tocando teclado e saxofone.

Atualmente, trabalha com artistas jovens como Emily Long e está produzindo o álbum da mesma.

Essa é uma pequena homenagem ao criador da Blue Angel Band.

Today, March 23, the leader of the band Blue Angel, John Turi, completes 60 years! John was born in Queens in New York on March 23, 1949. Was influenced by Elvis Presley and Buddy Holly and began playing in bands for fourteen years. Worked with wolves as Jimmy Hendrix, Ronnie Spector, Bulldog, Aerosmith, and Celebration, but is known for his work with Cyndi Lauper. The two worked together in the band Blue Angel (1978-1982) and even after the end of the band, continued with the partnership.

With Lauper wrote numerous songs, many never recorded officially. Some, little work during the Blue Angel were rewritten by Cyndi albums in "She's So Unusual" and "True Colors." John also worked with Cyndi world tour in 1989 in "A Night To Remember" playing keyboard and saxophone. Currently, works with young artists like Emily Long and is producing the album of the same.

This is a small tribute to the creator of Blue Angel Band.

Confira uma pequena entrevista que fiz com o guitarrista da banda Blue Angel, Arthur Neilson. Muito simpático, Arthur fala sobre sua paixão por música desde a infância, sua época na banda Blue Angel, o relacionamento com os integrantes depois do fim da banda e seus trabalhos atuais.

1 - Olá Arthur, como vai você?
Eu estou bem, apenas muito ocupado. Eu apenas retornei do Canadá e Montana, e, amanhã, me deixo por 2 semanas na Itália.

2 - Você é de onde Arthur?
Eu moro com a minha esposa Karan em Park Slope, no Brooklyn, New York . É um bairro muito bonito.

3-Quando começou a tocar guitarra? Conte-me a sua história.
De volta, tanto quanto me lembro eu estava apaixonado com o violão. Meu tio tinha um em seu armário, e eu esperava que ele iria rezar e levá-lo para fora e mostrá-lo para mim. Eu não recebi meu primeiro violão até que eu tinha 15 anos de idade. (Meus pais pensavam que era apenas uma febre) e eu próprio me ensinei após 2 anos, eu estava tocando em bandas. Eu realmente gostava de Blues todos os tocadores como Albert King e BB King, bem como caras como Chuck Berry e The Rolling Stones.

4-Antes de fazer parte da Banda Blue Angel, você esteve em outras bandas?
Eu toquei em grande quantidade com bandas locais de NYC , algumas bandas eram Blues e Rock, eram algumas bandas que estavam escrevendo suas próprias canções a tentar obter negócios com gravadora.

5-Como surgiu o convite para fazer parte da Banda Blue Angel?
Eu estava tocando em um clube em New York com uma dessas bandas de rock e Cyndi Lauper, John Turi e John Morelli foram na platéia. Eles estavam à procura de um novo guitarrista de sua banda "Blue Angel". O guitarrista que tinham antes de mim sondava muito Heavy. Eles queriam alguém que era mais para as raízes do Rock & Roll. Eles vieram até mim depois do meu show e perguntaram se eu estava interessado. Eu disse sim.

6-Você teve contato com os outros membros após a dissolução da banda?
Estou muito fechado com John Morelli, ficamos amigos e, ocasionalmente tocamos juntos. John Turi apenas me ligou ontem, ele vive no Arizona perto da costa ocidental (muito longe), mas ele quer voltar a NYC. Mantemos contato cerca de uma vez por ano. Ele me contava sobre Lee Brovitz de dois em dois anos. Eu perdi contato com Cyndi anos atrás, mas estou certo de que se nós ficarmos juntos, seria como velhos tempos. Nós todos ficamos amigos.

7-Após a Blue Angel, quais foram os seus trabalhos?
Quando a banda rompeu-se John Turi e eu tinhamos uma banda chamada "Boppin The Blues", foi uma mistura de R & B com o R & R e um toque de jazz e blues. Nós fomos fazer um show em New York uma noite de alguns anos mais tarde, e Cyndi e John Morelli foram. Foi a única reunião que tivemos. Eu toquei em grande quantidade em bandas de NY. Principalmente bandas Blues , minha esposa Karan e eu começamos uma banda chamada de "Cutaways" e quase assinamos com a Polydor Records o mesmo selo que "Blue Angel" era, mas durante, o negócio caiu. 8-Como foi trabalhar com Cyndi Lauper? Gosta de alguma música da carreira dela?
Blue Angel foi muito divertido! Cyndi e eu demos muitas gargalhadas assistindo alguns shows realmente bons. Quando eu escutei aquelas gravações da banda, eu fiquei surpreso do tanto que nós tocávamos bem.Eu gosto muito da música de Cyndi. Ela tem ainda um enorme voz. Não sei se o público sabe como uma boa cantora ela realmente é, por causa de toda sua fama.

9 - Foi lançada uma petição para reunir a Banda Blue Angel, em uma apresentação no canal VH1. O que pensa sobre isto?
É muito lisonjeiro, eu não acho que o Blue Angel foi muito conhecido.

10 - Você tem um projeto para este ano ou futuramente?
Vou continuar a turnê com Shemekia Copeland e em minha própria. Eu estou sempre escrevendo, e esperemos que eu vou estar de volta ao estúdio para gravar o meu 4o Cd em breve. Eu estou fazendo o que eu amo, tocando guitarra, por isso, espero poder continuar a fazê-lo durante o tempo que eu puder.

Check out a short interview I did with the guitarist of Blue Angel Band, Arthur Neilson. Very nice, Arthur talks about his passion for music since childhood, his time in Blue Angel Band, the relationship with the members after the end of band and its work today.

1 - Hello Arthur, how are you?
I'm fine, just very busy gigging. I just got back from Canada and Montana and, tomorrow, I leave for 2 weeks in Italy.

2 - You are where Arthur?
I live with my wife Karan in Park Slope Brooklyn, NYC. It's a very beautiful neighborhood.

3-When began playing guitar?
Tell me your story. From as far back as I can remember I was in love with the guitar. My Uncle had one in his closet and I would hope and pray that he would take it out and show it to me. I didn't get my first guitar until I was 15 years old. (My parents thought that it was just a fad) I taught myself and after 2 years, I was playing in bands. I really liked all the Blues players like Albert King and BB King as well as guys like Chuck Berry and The Rolling Stones.

4-Before making the Blue Angel Band, you were in other bands?
I played with lots of local NYC bands, some were Blues bands and some were Rock bands that were writing their own songs trying to get record deals.

5-How did the invitation to be part of the Blue Angel Band?
I was playing at a club in New York with one of those rock bands and Cyndi Lauper, John Turi and John Morelli were in the audience. They were looking for a new guitar player for their band "Blue Angel". The guitar player they had before me was too heavy sounding. They wanted someone who was more into the roots of Rock & Roll. They came up to me after my show and asked if I was interested. I said yes.

6-You had contact with the other members after the dissolution of the band?
I am very close with John Morelli, we have stayed friends and occasionally play together. John Turi just called me yesterday, he lives in Arizona near the west coast (very far away) but he wants to move back to NYC. We keep in touch about once a year. I hear from Lee Brovitz every couple of years. I lost contact with Cyndi years ago, but I'm sure that if we got together it would be like old times. We all stayed friends.

7-After Blue Angel, what were your work?
When the band broke up John Turi and I had a band called "Boppin The Blues" it was R&B mixed with R&R and a touch of Jazz and Blues. We were doing a gig in NYC one night a few years later, and Cyndi and John Morelli sat in. It was the only reunion we ever had. I played in lots of bands around NY. Mostly Blues Bands, my wife Karan and I started a band called the "Cutaways" and were almost signed to Polydor Records the same label "Blue Angel" was on, but the deal fell through.
For the past 10 years I have been playing with "Shemekia Copeland", an International Blues Artist, touring the world. She has 4 CD's out on the Alligator Label.
I also have 3 CD's of my own on Dixie Frog Records, a blues label based in Paris and have been touring for the last 8 years. (when I not working with Shemekia.)

8-How was working with Cyndi Lauper?
Like some music of her career? Blue Angel was a lot of fun! Cyndi and I had lots of laughs and we put on some really good shows. When I listen to old live recordings of the band, I'm surprised how strong and tight we sounded. I like a lot of Cyndi music. She still has a tremendous voice. I don't know if the public knows how good a singer she really is, because of all her fame.

9 - Was launched a petition to gather the Blue Angel Band in a presentation in the channel VH1. What do you think about it?
It's very flattering, I didn't think Blue Angel was that well known.

10 - Do you have a project for this year or future?
I will continue to tour with Shemekia Copeland and on my own. I'm always writing and hopefully I'll be back in the studio to record my 4th Cd sometime soon. I'm doing what I love, playing guitar, so I hope I can continue to do that for as long as I can.

Para quem achava que Cyndi Lauper nunca mais cantaria as músicas da banda Blue Angel deve ter ficado surpreso na última semana.

No show realizado dia 19 de junho no Bank Atlantic Center (Florida) promovendo a segunda edição da True Colors Tour, Cyndi canta "Anna Blue" acapella antes de começar "She Bop".

Este blog é dedicado a melhor banda de rockabilly de todos os tempos: Blue Angel, formada por Cyndi Lauper, John Turi, Arthur Neilson, Johnny Morelli e Lee Brovitz.
A banda não durou muito tempo, mas foi a partir dela que surgiu uma das melhores cantoras de todos os tempos: Cyndi Lauper.
Na década de 70 Cyndi Lauper fez parte de duas bandas, Doc West e Flyer. Nesta última Cyndi cantava rock and roll de Rolling Stones, Rod Stwart e Janis Joplin.
Em 1977, depois de três anos imitando Jagger e Stwart, sua voz estava numa pior e, quando Cyndi chamou uma amiga para substituí-la na banda, esta lhe recomendou que fosse ver Katie Agresta, uma competente professora de canto de Manhattam. Katie conta que encontrou Cyndi em péssimo estado. “Quase não podendo falar, três médicos lhe haviam dito que ela nunca mais poderia cantar.”. Katie ensinou-lhe exercícios vocais e aquecimentos, e indicou-lhe uma dieta apropriada. E devagarzinho Cyndi voltou a cantar. Restaurada a voz, Lauper arranjou para cantar um night club de Manhattam. Ted Rosemblatt, seu empresário na época, foi assistí-la uma noite e levou consigo um compositor chamado John Turi, que também tocava teclado e saxofone. Cyndi e John logo se tornaram amigos e começaram a compor juntos algumas canções. Por volta de 1978, eles tinham formado juntos uma banda de rock estilo anos 50 chamada Blue Angel. Na primavera de 1979, alguns demo tapes de Blue Angel chegaram às mãos de Steve Massarsky, um advogado, mas ele não ficou impressionado: "A fita era horrível". As canções eram ruins e mal tocadas. Havia algum interesse na voz da cantora "Cyndi", mas isso era tudo. Massarsky foi conferir o Blue Angel ao vivo num clube de nome Trax. "Quando Cyndi apareceu no palco", recorda o advogado, "foi como mágica, eu nunca tinha escutado nada parecido, fiquei apaixonado, ela era magnífica!". Tão entusiasmado ficou que Massarsky pagou 5.000 dólares para comprar o contrato que Cyndi mantinha com Rosemblatt. Massarsky montou um show para o Blue Angel e convidou toda a indústria fonográfica para assistir. A reação lembra-se, foi desanimadora. "A cantora é maravilhosa, livre-se da banda!".Contudo, seis meses mais tarde a Polygram Records, ofereceu um contrato de gravação para todo o grupo. O álbum de estréia, “Blue Angel”, lançado em 1980, foi bem aceito pela crítica, vendendo 100 mil cópias, mas não pelo estilo rockabilly, que a banda julgava ser sua especialidade. Foi o espetacular alcance vocal de Cyndi que despertou o interesse das poucas pessoas que ouviram o LP. Ainda assim Cyndi resistia em se lançar em carreia solo. Entretanto, em 1982 a Polygram dispensou o Blue Angel e o grupo teve um desentendimento com Massarsky, que exigia o pagamento de 80.000 mil dólares que lhe deviam. Cyndi estava entre os integrantes que decidiram declarar falência, o que lhes foi concedido em 1983. Na ocasião, o juiz que tratou do caso disse: "Deixem a canária cantar!". Com o Blue Angel demolido, Cyndi finalmente estava pronta para a carreira solo. Mas a amizade entre os integrantes da banda não acabou. Os integrantes da banda com exceção de Cyndi formaram uma banda chamada Boppin The Blues e tocaram durante a década de 1980. John Turi saiu na turnê "A Night to Remember" de Cyndi em 1989, tocando teclado e saxofone.
Todos continuam trabalhando com música, mas seguiram caminhos diferentes.
